TIN100 2010 Report

_5.jpegResilient & Strong : TIN100 2010

Welcome to the 6th edition of the TIN100 Report. This report is sponsored by NZTE, FRST, Ernst & Young and EverEdgeIP. It is a quantitative analysis of New Zealand’s 200 largest globally focused technology businesses in the areas of ICT, High Tech Manufacturing or Biotechnology.

TIN100 2010The report is designed to be a key reference for those who wish to understand the technology sector and participate in some way in its growth. We are working together for an informed tech industry.

The difficulties of the world’s economy since 2008 have reinforced the importance of a diversified economy as a key to economic strength. In fact the global recession has created opportunities for companies to proposer in markets that are fast growing and resilient.

Isolation has always been a catalyst for innovation. But in the past few decades, have been the many of the disadvantages of remoteness have evaporated as the world increasingly becomes a globally integrated marketplace.
In many ways the appreciation and volatility of our dollar has loomed as a larger factor than isolation from markets.
From these factors a number of trends have emerged. These include the growth in importance of Australia, the emergence of Asia, the fast growth of Healthcare and IT Services and Support, and the increasing importance of a market leadership position.

Building a world leading technology, becoming a market leader, establishing a global footprint, these are long games not short ones, more suited to builders not speculators. For this reason many of our most successful technology businesses are private companies (or companies who behave like one) who can take a long term view and reinvest profits.
TIN100 2010Many of these companies are enjoying remarkable success. The pragmatic approach to technical solutions is not new. In this year’s report we present some examples of this heritage, where New Zealand has led the world in such diverse areas as medicine, aviation and navigation.
Technology has the potential to pass dairy exports to become New Zealand’s largest source of export revenue. With export revenues of NZ$5b vs. dairy’s $8b the technology sector has the scalability to lead New Zealand’s economic growth.
This year we have expanded our report to 200 companies. In this way we can better capture the lifecycle, growth and attrition of companies, to create a better understanding of how to promote growth. Thank you to the new companies we have included in this year’s report for your cooperation.
Accurate compilation of industry statistics in the TIN100 Report provides a critical reference for companies involved in the sector as well as stakeholders, such as investors, government decision makers and service providers.
Copies of the report are distributed to every NZTE trade office internationally and are widely purchased by stakeholders. Government ministries responsible for economic development are increasingly using the report to strategise interventions.

We have invited all companies concerned to verify the data we have presented. Where companies would not divulge their revenue, we have made estimates based on relevant revenue per employee numbers. Estimated revenues are highlighted in the company profiles.

Thank you to our sponsors NZTE, FRST, Ernst and Young and EverEdgeIP. Also a big thank you to the TIN100 Companies themselves, not only for supplying the information contained in this report but also for providing inspiring examples of how to generate business in the global technology arena.
